matralab guest artist Julian Klein leads the Montreal ensemble Ciao Rhino and selected Concordia students through a brief introduction to his mise-en-musique technique. On March 1, the group will present a collaboratively created public music theatre performance developed over the course of Klein’s three-day workshop.

The concert takes place on March 1, 1 pm at Espace Cercle Carré. This event is open to all.

Julian Klein is an interdisciplinary composer and theatre director, as well as the Director of the Institute for Artistic Research Berlin and an editor of the Journal for Artistic Research. He developed mise-en-musique with fellow musicians and theatre artists in the interdisciplinary art group “a rose is.” The technique combines compositional and improvisational elements on an imaginary acoustical stage, and is based upon principles of impulse-response, resonance, foreground-background, harmonic space, and the shaping of sounds and structures into a Gestalt.
