On Tuesday (19:30h GMT+1), March 8th, a discussion (in German) with ethnologist and museum director Barbara Plankensteiner, composer and music researcher Sandeep Bhagwati (via Zoom) and dramaturge Immanuel Schipper will take place. The event will be hosted by the Ensemble Resonanz at resonanzraum (BUNKERSALON), Hamburg. The musicians of the Ensemble will be playing a comprovisation video score by Sandeep Bhagwati as a counterpoint to the conversations.

“Ist Musik ein Ausdruck ihrer Zeit? Oder formatiert (im Gegenteil) Musik ihre Epoche? Welche Kultur wird re-produziert, wenn Zeiten in Musik ihren Ausdruck finden, welche wird unterdrückt? Mit welchem Bewusstsein nähern wir uns fremden Kulturen und ihren Künsten? Und was hat das alles mit Privilegien und Macht zu tun?”

Is music an expression of its time? Or (on the contrary) does music format its epoch? Which culture is reproduced when times find expression in music, which is suppressed? With what awareness do we approach foreign cultures and their arts? And what does all this have to do with privilege and power?
