On November 22, William Yong and Zata Omm present the full-length version of STEER as part of the CINARS Biennale. The project was conceived by William Yong, Jerôme Delapierre, and matralab research associate Navid Navab.
STEER exposes imaginary inner worlds through a fusion of biology and technology. The interplay of sound, visuals and light drives movement, interacting with and responding to sensors. The performance establishes a bridge to a dreamlike state and manifests the hidden world of thought into reality.
The initial stages of exploration for STEER took place at a matralab residency.

Faire bon ménage
Je garde certaines réserves quant à la théorie de la hiérarchie des besoins formulée par Abraham Maslow dans les années 1940. Elle stipule que les besoins fondamentaux (les besoins physiologiques, de sécurité, d’amour et d’appartenance) doivent être satisfaits afin que l’individu puisse combler (ou envisager de combler) ses besoins d’ordre supérieur (les besoins d’estime et d’accomplissement de soi). Pourquoi la pyramide de Maslow n’intègre-t-elle pas la dimension esthétique de l’environnement qui nous entoure ?
Au cours d’une phase plus récente de ma recherche-création, j’ai constaté que l’attention portée à la culture matérielle, ainsi qu’à l’embellissement du chez-soi et de ses environs, est étroitement liée à la quête de sens déclenchée par un épisode de déplacement. J’irais même jusqu’à dire qu’en ignorant la dimension esthétique d’une situation de déplacement, les traumatismes associés à la perte du chez-soi sont plus susceptibles de persister et ainsi, de nuire à l’intégration dans un nouvel environnement de vie.
En mettant l’accent sur l’embellissement du domicile, Faire bon ménage se veut un geste d’accueil à l’égard des immigrants mineurs et sans-papiers qui trouvent refuge à la maison de l’Association France Terre d’Asile, à Amiens. À une époque où la mobilité mondiale est en croissance, cette performance propose un regard critique sur le rôle que peut jouer la pratique artistique dans la mobilisation du public face aux problématiques liées à l’émigration.

Longtime matralab affiliates Jane Tingley and Michał Seta are presenting “Re-Collect” as part of this year’s International Symposium on Electronic Arts in Dubai. On Sunday, November 2 at 2pm, Jane and Michał will be discussing their work alongside of other artists exhibiting at Cuadro Gallery.
