For the 14th edition of the A•Devantgarde Festival 2017 in Munich, Sandeep Bhagwati’s composition, Sutra will be performed by the NAMES Ensemble Salzburg. The performance will take place May 25th at 8:00pm.

Study Day on intercultural music: Bali-Quebec and Beyond
matralab director Sandeep Bhagwati will be participating in a panel discussion on the topic of intercultural music in Quebec. matralab affiliates Gabriel Dharmoo, Sameer Dublay, Georgina Born and Jonathan Goldman will also be partaking in this event. Bhagwati and Dublay will be discussing ‘Intertraditional comprovisation’ with the Sangeet Prayog ensemble project, Dhvani Sutras.

Magella Skerritt Quartet at Upstairs

In The Belly
Matralab affiliates Joe Browne and Felix Del Tredici are part of the multidisciplinary improvisational show, In The Belly. This event is a hybrid of multi-media/theatre/concert with local musicians, and visual artists, including a writer from Toronto. Each performer will each bring offerings about the whale: legends, myths, musings and stories. It explores everything from Moby Dick to the intimate field recordings of a humpback whale.

MNM: Rust
Upcoming matralab explore guests Jean-François Laporte and Benjamin Thigpen will perform their project, Rust for Montreal Nouvelles Musiques. The show will commence at 9pm in the Fine Arts Black Box. The inspiration for this project is through the imagery of decay; specifically the oxidation process of material.
This will be a comprovisation concert of live acoustic and electronic instruments. These sounds will create an interactive organic experience with the space through blocks of sound.

MNM: Budding Composers
Matralab director Sandeep Bhagwati will be holding a workshop for the Festival Montréal Nouvelles Musiques.
The workshop welcomes school groups to participate. The focus will be on Bhagwati’s new interdisciplinary piece, Niemandslandhymnen. Bhagwati will be joined by mezzo-soprano Marie-Annick Béliveau and flautist Guy Pelletier. This workshop will give students the chance to observe the creation process of the piece, and the opportunity to create through improvisation. There will be other composition activities accessible as well to contribute towards the session.

Contemporary Musical Horizons
matralab director Sandeep Bhagwati will be a speaker at the upcoming international conference Contemporary Musical Horizons for the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec. The surrounding topics are both the current and future states of contemporary music. Through his discussion, “Asking the Hard Questions about Music” Bhagwati will be discussing the dynamic of Concordia University’s music program through it’s creativity and interdisciplinary aspects.

Beta Lyræ: Nebulae
Flautist, improviser-composers Cléo Palacio-Quintin and Terri Hron have received the Prix Opus music prize for their work Beta Lyræ: Nebulae. Their innovative pieces won album of the year in the category of contemporary and electroacoustic music.
Matralab director Sandeep Bhagwati as well as composers Samuel Vriezen and Edgar Varèse contributed pieces towards the project. Bhagwati’s piece Sutra(2013) is featured on the album.
The album is presented by Conseil québécois de la musique as part of the 20th edition of the Prix Opus Gala.
