Cultural Identity and Post-exoticism in New Music: Round Table and Concert
Following up on the “Glocal Music” symposium held in February 2013, matralab (Concordia University) will present, on March 25, 2014, between 9:30 am and 3:00 pm, a roundtable discussion on the themes of cultural identity and post-exoticism in new music. This event will take place at Concordia’s Loyola Campus Jesuit Hall and Conference Centre. Room RF-110, Refectory, 7141, Sherbrooke Street West.
The following topics will be discussed: borrowings from traditional Inuit culture in contemporary music; discursive elements and stereotypes about Canadian music; the role of improvisation in hybrid or intercultural creative approaches; challenges while performing works of hybrid or intercultural aesthetics; the aesthetic negotiation in hybrid co-created works; how relevant is the question of cultural identity for electroacoustic music; the phonocultural approach in acousmatic music.

As a prelude to this roundtable, participants and audience will gather for a concert on March 24, 2014, at 5:00pm. This concert will take place in the matrabox (04.502 EV Building, 1515 St. Catherine Street West)
