Cultural Identity and Post-exoticism in New Music: Round Table and Concert
Following up on the “Glocal Music” symposium held in February 2013, matralab (Concordia University) will present, on March 25, 2014, between 9:30 am and 3:00 pm, a roundtable discussion on the themes of cultural identity and post-exoticism in new music. This event will take place at Concordia’s Loyola Campus Jesuit Hall and Conference Centre. Room RF-110, Refectory, 7141, Sherbrooke Street West.
The following topics will be discussed: borrowings from traditional Inuit culture in contemporary music; discursive elements and stereotypes about Canadian music; the role of improvisation in hybrid or intercultural creative approaches; challenges while performing works of hybrid or intercultural aesthetics; the aesthetic negotiation in hybrid co-created works; how relevant is the question of cultural identity for electroacoustic music; the phonocultural approach in acousmatic music.
Participants: Martin Bédard, Sandeep Bhagwati, Marie-Hélène Breault, Claudine Caron, Gabriel Dharmoo, Jean-François Denis, Katia Makdissi-Warren, Shawn Mativetsky and Cléo Palacio-Quintin.
As a prelude to this roundtable, participants and audience will gather for a concert on March 24, 2014, at 5:00pm. This concert will take place in the matrabox (04.502 EV Building, 1515 St. Catherine Street West)
The round table and the concert are both closely related to the conversation “Music of Creativity”, between Sandeep Bhagwati and Jian Gomeshi, which will be presented in the series “Thinking out loud“, on March 25, 2014, at 7:00pm, Oscar-Peterson Concert Hall, 7141 Sherbrooke Street West. Free entry for all workshop participants.
matralab is a research space of inter-x art directed by the Canada Research Chair in Inter-X Art, Sandeep Bhagwati, at Concordia University in Montréal. We are dedicated to using interdisciplinary art practice to bridge the gap between emerging art forms and their aesthetic reflection. Our research is leading to the establishment of a practical and theoretical framework for the creation and evaluation of interdisciplinary, intercultural, intermedia and interactive art.

Identité culturelle/post-exotisme en musique nouvelle : table ronde & concert
À la suite du symposium « Musiques glocales », présenté en février 2013, le matralab (Université Concordia) présentera, le 25 mars 2014, entre 9h30 et 15h, une table ronde portant sur les thèmes de l’identité culturelle et du post-exotisme en musique nouvelle. Cet événement aura lieu sur le campus Loyola de l’Université Concordia au local RF-110 du Refectory, Loyola Jesuit Hall and Conference Centre, situé au 7141, rue Sherbrooke Ouest.
Les sujets suivants seront abordés : les emprunts à la culture traditionnelle inuite dans la musique contemporaine ; les éléments discursifs et les stéréotypes sur la musique canadienne; le rôle de l’improvisation dans l’approche créative hybride ou interculturelle, les défis inhérents à l’interprétation d’œuvres d’esthétiques hybrides ou interculturelles, la négociation esthétique dans les œuvres hybrides co-créées, la pertinence de la question de l’identité culturelle dans la musique électroacoustique, l’approche phonoculturelle dans la musique acousmatique.
Musiciens et chercheurs participants : Martin Bédard, Sandeep Bhagwati, Marie-Hélène Breault, Claudine Caron, Gabriel Dharmoo, Jean-François Denis, Katia Makdissi-Warren, Shawn Mativetsky et Cléo Palacio-Quintin.
En guise de prélude à cette table ronde, un concert sera présenté par les participants, le 24 mars 2014, à 17h. Ce concert aura lieu au matrabox (04.502 de l’édifice EV, 1515 rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest).
La table ronde et le concert s’inscrivent tous deux en parallèle à la conversation « Music of Creativity », entre Sandeep Bhagwati et Jian Gomeshi, qui sera présentée dans la série « Thinking out loud », le 25 mars 2014, à 19h, à la Salle de concert Oscar-Peterson, située au 7141, rue Sherbrooke Ouest, Montréal. L’entrée est gratuite pour tous les participants de la table ronde.
matralab est un espace de recherche en arts inter-x dirigé par le Chaire de Recherche en Arts Inter-X, Sandeep Bhagwati, à l’Université Concordia à Montréal. Nous envisageons la pratique artistique interdisciplinaire comme un vecteur permettant de dresser des ponts entre diverses formes artistiques émergentes et une réflexion esthétique à leur sujet. Notre recherche tend à l’établissement d’un cadre pratique et théorique pour la création et l’évaluation d’un art interdisciplinaire, interculturel, intermédiatique et interactif.
